Dream Tour for Diabetes

Pete on the Atlantic Coast

Peter Hoogenboom, a 46-year-old cyclist with diabetes who works for University Health Care, arrived victoriously last October at the Utah Diabetes Center, where he concluded a seven-month, 10,000-mile bike tour through the forty-eight contiguous United States.

Peter Hoogenboom is a bicyclist from Salt Lake City, Utah with 22 years of bicycling experience. In 1973, Peter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 14. After struggling with diabetes for ten years, Peter developed a winning strategy to live well with diabetes rather than fight against it. Peter has always been active. In high school, he ran cross-country, played hockey, swam competitively, and played golf. In college, he earned a spot on the swim team (NCAA Division III). For the past 22 years, Peter has used exercise, especially bicycling, as a powerful tool against the complications of diabetes.

After 10,000 miles Pete crosses the finish line

Winner of the 2005 Bayer Ascensia Dream Fund, Peter used The Dream Tour as a way to share his success in living well with diabetes through self-management and an active, healthy lifestyle. He feels that sharing his experiences in bicycling and dealing with diabetes can help inspire all people with diabetes towards better care of their diabetes.
