Matthew Hughes, M.D.

Dr. HughesMatthew Hughes, MD, MPH is an Occupational and Environmental Medicine physician.  His professional interests include management of medical programs, international health, and workplace health promotion.  Prior to joining the University of Utah, he gained extensive experience in corporate medical management as the Western Hemisphere Medical Director for BP and Associate Medical Director for Marathon Oil Company. He has led efforts to improve employee health and safety programs, international public health, and benefits related programs including absence management.   He was a recipient of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) Corporate Health Achievement Award in 2003 for program excellence at Marathon Oil Company.  Dr. Hughes is a contributing author of ACOEM’s evidence-based practice guidelines (ACOEM’s Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines, 2nd Edition and Updates).

Dr. Hughes is Deputy Director of the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-sponsored Education and Research Center.  He teaches in several graduate level courses, including Clinical Prevention, Occupational Injury and Disease, and Health Care Administration in Occupational and Environmental Health.  He is an active member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Qualifications:
Dr. Hughes is board certified in Preventive Medicine in the subspecialty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.  He graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1993. He completed a Master of Public Health degree and Occupational and Environmental Medicine residency at Emory University in 1997.
