AirMed was established in 1972 as the 8th air medical transport program in the nation. In 40 years of existence, AirMed has grown into an award winning air medical transport service which currently utilizes a combination of four rotor- and two fixed-wing aircraft from six locations throughout the state to transport approximately 2500 patients per year.

AirMed's main base is The University of Utah Hospital, an academic medical center, a Level I Trauma Center, a Regional Burn Center and a major tertiary referral site.

The University hospital provides services for one of the largest geographic areas of the United States, routinely receiving patients from Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Nevada. AirMed provides air medical transport for the majority of these referral patients.

Airmed receives approval for External Long Range Avalanche Receiver from the FAA

The FAA has approved the use of an extremely needed tool in Utah during the winter. We now have 3 Long Range Avalanche Receivers, that will detect someone's avalanche becon from a distance of 200 yards. This tool is roughly three times the range of a standard receiver from the ground.

Safety and the Highest Quality of Care

AirMed joined AAMS in 1995, and has been a voting member continuously since that time. CAMTS accredited since 1998, AirMed is committed to providing the safest and highest quality care possible to patients in the Intermountain West. Besides the main AirMed bases at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and the Salt Lake City International Airport. There are satellite bases in Park City, Payson, Ogden, and in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

The program's dedication to achieving excellence in every aspect of our medical transport is demonstrated by constant evaluation of the program's strengths, weaknesses, successes, and areas of needed improvement. Each member of the AirMed team is valued and supported, held accountable, and encouraged to seek opportunities for ongoing personal and professional growth.

Transport

In order to best meet the needs of the patients and communities we serve, efficiently and with financial responsibility, AirMed utilizes a variety of aircraft; one Bell 430 helicopter, three Bell 407 helicopters, and two Pilatus PC-12 turboprop airplanes.

This combination of air transport vehicles and their strategically-planned locations allows AirMed the flexibility to safely accomplish the multitude of patient transports required in our specific service area, including long-distance transports and ones into small rural airports, two-patient transports, and others involving high altitudes or flying over large bodies of water.

Because of the unique layout of the hospital campus, AirMed also has a ground ambulance to use when transport of a patient from one on-campus facility to another is requested.

Aviation services are provided by Airmethods Inc. Under FAA part 135 on demand air carrier certificate #QMLA253U.
